This has been a good semester and a good class. I have learned a lot about social media throughout this course. Before I took this course honestly I didn’t even really know what social media is, like I would have guessed it was the social aspect of the media but really wouldn’t have even known that it was Twitter and Facebook and things like that that I use every day and I definitely didn’t know all the things you could do with it. I have evolved this semester from just a guy using the internet to somewhat of a social media expert if I do say so myself.
I know that I may not use social media the way I should, but at least now after taking this class I know how I am supposed to be using it professionally and that if I had to be professional I would be able to do it now. For now social media is just a social tool for me, but I know that in the future I will have to make this part of my business profile and when this happens I will have to clean up what I do and have done in the past on my social media websites. Knowing is half the battle. For example before this class I kind of had Twitter, had just started using it but now I know I can make lists, participate in tweet chats, make up hashtags for certain things that I want to keep tabs on and much more!
In conclusion, I have learned so much about social media and I know that I can only learn more from here now that the door is open. Facebook and Twitter and just the small picture, there are hundreds of other tools out there that I don’t even know about that people are using on a daily basis. If you truly want to reach people in the business world, one of the easiest and most efficient ways to do that would have to be social media. And now I know that.

This week we are looking at social media measurement tools. There are many tools that you can use to track and measure how your social media tools are doing. Some of these show you how many people have visited your site, commented, shared and much more. The purpose of these tools are to really see how effective social media is for your business. You do not want to be using all sorts of social media tools if there is only really one that your customers are using, so this would let you know who is using your social media sites so that you can really know what to focus on. In this blog post I will just talk about a few of the social media measurement tools that are out there.
The first tool that I am going to talk about is Adobe Sitecatalyst. This tool is predominately made for businesses. Their main goal is to figure out how people are using your website, where they are navigating on your website so that you can figure out how to make your company the most profitable. This tool tells you everything from how many visitors have been on your site, to what links they clicked on and how much time they spent on it. Curalate, this is a tool specifically used to measure usage of a picture based website, for example pintrest. This tool is much less about text and virtually all about images. This tool shows you who has been looking at your content on your website and information about them so you really get to know who is interested in your company. When it shows you the people that are looking at your content it also shows what else they are looking at so you can see their interests. This tool really rolls all of your social media tools into one and shows you how you are doing compared to your competition. Finally there is Radian6, this is a tool to track what people are saying about your company on blogs and comments on all of your social media sites. This lets you see what people are saying about you and how many people are saying it about you so that you know what to focus on for customer satisfaction. In conclusion, social media tools are something very important to businesses of every variety. As you can see there are tools of all types that do all sorts of different things for you. Whether you want to see how many people visit your site, what they’re looking at or what they’re talking about! These tools were made so that you can maximize how effective you are using social media to portray your company.
What is a social media plan? A social media plan is something a company does to organize their thoughts and what they are going to do with social media to promote/support/help their business. For example it will be the plan that Extreme Promotional Materials makes to use social media for their business. This will include their mission, vision, goals, key messages, target audiences, the social media tools that they are going to use and the social media engagement strategy.
Mission- To provide personalized quality uniforms and materials to businesses, sports teams and schools at any level providing you with friendly service.
Vision- Trying to outreach and broaden the customer base to expand.
Goals- Looking to move on from small local businesses and schools to bigger companies niches.
Extreme Promotional Materials is dedicated to providing companies, sports teams and schools with personalized and quality materials including uniforms. We work with quality manufacturers that provide us with your goods that can be customized to your specific needs. We are a fairly new company only in our 15thyear of business and looking to broaden our customer base so that we can expand and employ more people to create more jobs. With our social media outreach we are looking to reach out to all school and sports teams and some businesses across Ontario.
The social media tools that I would use for this company would be Facebook and Twitter. The reasoning behind this is that for promoting and connecting with possible customers these would be the ideal tools. With Facebook you would be able to have your page with albums of pictures with products you have sold and make a photo library for people to browse online. This would also let people comment on these pictures and updates to let you know what they would like to see you do to make them choose your company. You would also be able to display some of the better work that you have done just so that potential clients can see what your company is capable of. Using Twitter is the best way to get news out. This means when you get your latest shipment of a certain type of t-shirts that you but designs on, you could let people know and get the word out. When you put a picture on twitter, your followers can retweet it so that more people could see it and this just really helps you network so that more people can see your work and know your companies name. The person that would be taking charge of these accounts would most likely be the owner. Once the company starts getting bigger though it would most likely be whoever is in charge of advertising and communicating with the general public. This would be one of the faces of the company so you would have to be official and keep it so that people get a positive vibe when they look at your pages. All of these pages would be geared towards the general public to get the word out and advertise so that more people know the company name. Once the word gets out sports teams and schools would start to hear about the work you are doing and would possibly contact you.
Using these tools like this would be the ideal way to promote your own company. Another way that you could look into is a company blog, but personally I do not know if a blog would work the best for this company. In conclusion, for a company like this who is looking to expand and move on to bigger clients the only way to do it is to outreach. You have to show people the work you are doing and impress them so that they want your product. Extreme Promotional Materials can be the face of your company!
Digital footprint. What is that? It’s everything about you that people can see online. You know that party last year where you were playing beer pong, posted pictures on your facebook page. Well now that picture is there for everyone to see. Now you may say that’s not a big deal I don’t mind all of my friends and family seeing these pictures, it’s not that big of a deal. YOU’RE WRONG. These pictures are now on the internet; this means that more than just your family and friends on facebook can see them. That means that possible employers can now see these pictures. How many employers when they Google possible candidates for a job want to see that candidate taking a beer bong or drunk in a bar. Easy answer. NONE. So in this blog post I am going to talk about all of the ways you can improve your digital footprint so that you can use social media to your own advantage. Because in this day and age, with the way technology works, employers WILL Google you.
The first step I would take is to lock down facebook. Right now my whole profile is public which means that anyone can see most of the content on my facebook page without even being my friend. This means that everyone can see my drunken pictures from prom two years ago, and my beer bong pictures from Halloween. If I were to be looking for a job right now and an employer found me on facebook and saw the pictures and content on it, I do not believe that they would be very impressed. This means that I would have to go into my privacy settings and make it so that my entire profile is private and I would be able to control who would see specific content on my profile. I would also get rid of most of my drinking pictures. There are a lot from high school years and bars, stuff like that and they are not the best pictures to have to improve my reputation. To remove pictures that I have posted I would just have to go in and delete the pictures, for others I may just be able to untag myself and then it would not be an issue, but for some that you really need to get rid of so that no one can see them you may have to ask some of your friends that have posted these pictures to delete them so that they are actually gone rather than just not on your profile.
Next step to stay on top of my digital footprint would to actually Google myself on a regular bases. When you do this, you get to see what other people are seeing if they happen to Google you. For example, if you Google your own name and the first thing that pops up is something that you don’t want a future employer to see, you might want to fix that. By regularly searching yourself you can see what the first glance into your life people are going to see. Personally when I Google myself the first things that come up, other than the obvious Facebook and Twitter, are articles about my curling career. There are articles from last year when my junior team went to provincials, and even all the way back to my high school curling career at Moira Secondary School, including a couple Bay of Quinte and COSSA gold medals. This is exactly the type of thing I would like employers to be looking at. So in that aspect of my digital footprint I am already doing a good job and I need to make sure that it stays that way.
The last thing that I would do to improve my digital footprint is to clean up twitter. Instead of tweeting about random things you do and inappropriate things I would need to make it more professional. Less drunk tweets and things that can get you in trouble with respect to work. This may mean that I would have to go back and delete some questionable tweets from the past too. Depending on what you really have tweeted. Making your twitter account more professional also means maybe making another account with a more appropriate name or changing the one you already have. You want it to be easy for people to know they have you. So mine would be @RileyCalwell and display name would be Riley Calwell, not something like “Big-R” which is a nickname I got that I use for my bbm display name. It’s just all about being professional and this makes it so that if someone goes on your twitter profile they know it’s you. This makes you easy to find for anyone who may be looking for you. Not saying that’s always a good thing, but if your digital footprint is taken care of then you will have nothing to worry about.
In conclusion, with the way technology is, you have to be careful, but more importantly be prepared. This means that you must stay on top of your digital footprint and watch what you are doing on your social media tools to make sure that you are giving yourself a positive image. When employers search you on Google you want them to see a whole bunch of reasons why they should hire you and why you would be a good candidate, they don’t want to see how well you can handle a beer bong.
Businesses everywhere are changing to make everything exactly what the customer wants and more importantly needs. On Mashable I found an article called “The Force Is Strong With These Star Wars Flash Drives” by Christine Erickson. This article is gearing up for the Christmas season already. We all know that when Halloween is over its time to get ready for Christmas, and the articles on Mashable are already showing that. This is all about how businesses are not only making things that do what you want them to now, but they are trendy and what you want them to look like too. These flash drives are made into the characters from the famous Star Wars movies. This just shows how businesses are changing. In the past people just looked for something that worked, nobody cared what a floppy disk looked like when we used those, but now that USB drives are being used there are all sorts of shapes and sizes so that you can get whatever you want or need, whether that be large storage or R2D2 sticking out of your computer. http://mashable.com/2012/11/04/star-wars-flash-drives/
I found that Social Media Explorer was more professional the Mashable. It has more detailed articles with better information. In the article “The Economics of Bad Outreach” it tells all about the do’s and don’ts of outreach for a business. Mark Smiciklas gives all sorts of information about how you should organize your outreach. You have to be careful when using social media because if you have too many emails and letters going out, it begins to look like spam mail. You have to be more careful and advertise more like a human. So instead of having mass emails and letters going out it is becoming more normal for businesses to create blogs, twitter accounts and facebook pages. This lets the customers come to you and makes it seem less like it is just a computer sending out mass spam messages. “Facebook Admits Too Much Facebook Probably Isn’t Healthy” by Josh Constine, is the name of the article I picked on TechCrunch. This news site is focussed on the technology side of social media (who would have thought with a name like TechCrunch). This article is all about relating Facebook to a birthday cake, in the way that Facebook is good in moderation, but too much can be addicting and is not healthy. There are some people that cannot go without their social media. It talks about it in this article and i have seen it firsthand. Teenagers in this modern day with smartphones and computers can’t help but browse all sorts of web content. I have been at parties where there is a full house and everyone is having fun then you see someone sitting on a sofa or in a corner somewhere by themselves on their phone just browsing through Facebook and Twitter endlessly. In conclusion, looking through all of these sites, there is a lot of things going on in the world of business and the world of Social media. Not all of these are good things, but there is more positive than negative i believe. Businesses need to learn how to use all of these tools effectively so that they can reach their customers in a way that will keep them coming back and not turn them off. I would not usually use these sites but they would be good for a business to keep tabs on.
Instagram, Pintrest, Foursquare, QR Codes, Wikis, podcasting, Google+ and StumbleUpon. What are do all of these have in common? They are all social media platforms. Social media platforms originally are for the average person to use. People at home connecting with friends, meeting new friends and even just sharing their thoughts/pictures with the world. But now, social media is so much more than just connecting with your friends. Now companies are using these platforms to catch consumers eyes, interest them in their product and then get feedback. All of these social media tools have changed the way companies advertise. It used to be that a company would have commercials and billboards, there was not too much feedback from the customers, but with all of these new tools and windows companies have to reach the public, it has become a two way street. Companies can now advertise, show their products and get feedback all on the same website.
If I were to advertise for my company today with one of these companies, personally I would use Instagram and Google+. Instagram is a rapidly growing social platform where anyone with an android, iphone or ipod touch can take pictures of anything using certain filters and borders to customize it to their liking. For companies, this means that they could show their product in many different angles with color filters to make it appealing to their customers. For example, if you are a sports memorabilia company, trying to sell hats, jerseys, etc. What better way to show a variety of signed football jerseys then in a shadow box on your home page for all of your followers to see, You can put up pictures off all of the best memorabilia you own so that all of your avid followers can see what you have, new or old. Personally, as a huge sports fan, who likes to but the occasional hat or jersey would love to have a local company that would do something like this just so that I could see what the latest lines of football jerseys and hats were that they got into the store. It would let me see what they have and when I saw something I like I would be going there as soon as soon as possible to pick it up.
Google+ is very different from Instaram, in a way it is more like Facebook, but it did not catch on in the same way. I have had a Google+ account for a few years and never really used it, but when I go on it the odd time, there are usually some interesting things to see. On the home page, there are always the latest trends and news articles that are big in the world and being talked about. Also instead of Facebook where you just have all of your friends, in Google+ you can sort your friends into “circles”. If I were to follow companies on Google+, I could put all of the companies that I follow into one circle, and this means that when I go into this circle, all I would see is the posts from the companies I have placed in this circle. This would be useful because it organizes things in a way that Facebook doesn’t. Someone can have all of their school friends in one circle, work in another then companies. Once again in the sense of sports memorabilia, you can post what you are getting in your shipments, the latest line of Green Bay cheeseheads you just got in, and when you post this, everyone who has you in a circle would be able to see these, then comment on them so that you could see what the public is showing their interest in. With this feedback you can change the way you order and realize what is in demand. You can really refine the way you order to meet the customer’s wants and needs.
In conclusion, all forms of social media are growing in this day and age. Most people are getting their information and looking for information online and not as much in newspapers and on tv. This changes the way that companies have to advertise and reach out to their customers. The companies that are not keeping up, are falling behind. Therefore these examples in this blog post are just very small ways that companies can use social media platforms to reach out to their customers and show them what they are doing with their company, and in return the customers can comment and help improve the satisfaction level. I do not personally use many of these social media tools, but I know many people that do. A lot of people that I know using these tools as well find things that they like and make purchases because of that. So I do not know firsthand how effective this is, but I have seen it working in action, and it truly is the way that advertising will be moving towards in the future.
Pet Pawsitive is a specialized pet company that is all about training animals and treating them right. Their focus is primarily of the animal first. When you have a company like this the best way to advertise is to appeal to animal lovers. I would go about doing this by making many videos showing some of the exercises that you do with the animals and just displaying all of the good things you can do with the animals. This will also show the customers what will come out of the training that they will be paying for. In the food aspect, commercials for animal food are all pretty similar and there is not too much you can do about that. One advertisement that is different then all the rest though are the whiskas temtations videos. Those are very different and quite interesting videos that appeal to all animal lovers. They include things like, when you shake the bag, the cat knows that there are yummy treats in there and will do anything to get them. Something like that for the food would be a good way to advertise. Pretty much in some way showing that the animal will love the food that you are selling.
To show all of your customers the attention their animals will be getting, a behind the scenes video is necessary, this video should include showing all of your facilities and your trainers in the video so the potential customers will see where they are sending their dogs and let them see the face of the people that will be training them. It is a very over used idea, but that’s cause it works, and what I’m talking about is obviously you have to have a video of a pet owner with their dog and the trainer, teaching the dog something with a smile on the face of the owner and the employee. This is what people want to see in every commercial because it gives them the feeling that they will be happy there with their animal if they decide to take it there. One key part to any company that you must have is a good slogan, at the start or end of every video there must be a slogan that people will hear, remember and think of your company.
In conclusion, advertising for a company is not too hard. The hardest part is really trying to be unique, The way the world is today, everything is advertised on signs, videos and radio, so the hardest part is making yours stand out so that people will think of your company instead of another company. The necessities are a good slogan, happy people and pets in your videos, and just making sure that you show off everything good that your company does that makes it truly stand out, For example Pet Pawsitive raises money for the community every year in the form of events and fundraisers, don’t be afraid to let your potential customers know this. You never really know what could end up attracting future customers to your store instead of another. Every little thing could make a difference, so don’t cut any corners. Happy animals, happy owners.
